One thing that I used to always enjoy during the weeks of Advent was my Advent calendar (or count-down calender as some people call it). I can remember, as a child excitedly rushing into the kitchen first thing in the morning to open the next door on my calendar and see what was behind (and we only ever had pictures, no chocolate, and still it was such an exciting thing that made Advent very special to me).
I still like the idea of an Advent calendar. It helps to look forward to Christmas and gives all of December a festive and special atmosphere.
This week I went to the post office to pick up a huge parcel and found the most amazing Advent calendar ever inside (thank you Amelie and Christian*). Now we’re having fun trying to fill it with little things like baking ingredients (ginger for our gingerbread nativity), concert tickets, dried fruit, a bit of chocolate, little craft things etc. We’re having fun and M is circling the thing dying to be able to open the first door.
*der Richtigkeit halber soll natürlich Herr und Frau Treyde an dieser Stelle besonders gedankt sein!! Vielen Dank an sie für ihre Großzügikeit.

Wow - that is really cool! I remember exactly the same excitement when I was a kid. We used to have lovely Advent Calendars that my Grandmother sent over from Germany (they just had pictures behind the doors, except for the last year or two when they had little chocolates, which was a real treat for us as we didn’t have chocolate often in our house!). The lead up to Christmas was always so exciting as a kid. It’s nice here in Germany (more ‘Christmassy’ than in Australia) but it’s not so enjoyable for me as an adult. I really think having kids to enjoy it with would give Christmas a whole new shine. I hope you have a lovely Christmas!

What an amazing creation! Mim and Esther will have such fun with this. I guess they will have already opened the first window or door by now. Love from Grandma

Wow that looks like one excellent Advent calendar. My daughter loves Advent calendars, It think more for the excitement of opening the doors rather than whats behind them

Alex, yes, we’re enjoying making this time of year extra special for the children and seeing their excitement … and of course joining into the excitement. That’s the best thing when you’ve got kids, you can become more of a child yourself again.
Dear Grandma, yes both of them are absolutely loving it, and even E is getting a hang of how to pull the strings to open the doors.
Haddock, thanks for visiting again. I do agree with you, I think half the fun is the suspension, when they don’t know what’s behind the door.
